What is a Pekapoo?
The Pekapoo is a small TOY BREED that has been around for over 30 years! Our first "Pek-A-Poo" cross, was an "accident" or "unplanned" breeding between a Toy Poodle and a "Sleeve" Pekingese back in 1973. (The "sleeve" pekingese, for those who do not know, are Pekingese that only reach 5-7 lbs.,)Ping,a 6 lbs gold sable/white female had never been bred as she never had anyone small enough to breed her...until along came little "Smokey" our male Silver Toy Poodle, all "5 lbs of him!! Out came little "Tiffany" a cream/blonde female and "Pierre" a blue black/white male!! Well since these "mutts" were so cute (as ALL puppies are!!) we kept Tiffany and found a wonderful home for little Pierre with my grandmother...cute/adorable "Little" Tiffany grew up (as ALL PUPPIES DO!) and was BEAUTIFUL to us(??!!), except....she had inherited her mother's underbite, and short legs, and her dad's kinky hair, and long snout, with longer poodle legs in back, hence she always "appeared" to be "running down-hill" as she was "higher in the rear than in front!!! She was funny looking to many but we loved her all the same...not knowing any better of course...well while the queen princess was maturing into a not as cute as she was when she was LITTLE, a "Mutt",LOL... Pierre on the other hand was going from the ugly duckling to the SWAN!!!! He had the BEST features of BOTH his mom and dad... like...an "in the middle of the two" per say....not a long nose not a short nose, but a perfect little POUT, soft full silky coat, not long and harsh like a peke, and not kinky and wiry like a poodle... his legs were short, but NOT too short, so he wasn't a "belly crawler" like a peke, or a leggy spider like a poodle...yet he hardly ever shed...he would drop his coat yearly over a week or so and that was about it, he never required much if any grooming, and was very "easy to maintain"...Tiffany on the other hand...shed, she matted very easily, she required a regular grooming that just never was right...she was bushy in some places and smooth and wiry in others...,sometimes she looked like she had a big bushy behind, because she had shed out so much in front before it was time for her to shed in back...she was a "2-peice" dog,...and that is the GAMBLE with FIRST TIME CROSSES...Pierre on the other hand...well he was a TRAFFIC STOPPER...so it worked ....BY ACCIDENT....but by keeping the BEST "Pierre's" from each cross, and only and I mean ONLY by BREEDING the very best from "that" best litter, we managed to keep certain "traits" or characteristics from EACH breeding...By keeping the very best and breeding to the very best for many years we have somewhat improved on "BREED TYPE" or BREED CHARACTERISTICS"...fortunately when you have such a large gene pool (as when you have "2" breeds involved)you have reduced your chances of inherited risks defects via OUTCROSSIN and no need for "IN-BREEDING"...many breeds have CONGENITAL LIFE THREATENING DEFECTS "due" to over "Inbreeding and "Linebreeding" as the "gene-pool" is too close, This is one of the MANY reasons we LOVE the Hybrid "outcrosses" as you do NOT see near as many health problems as straight "inline" breeds. Ask any vet how many HIP replacements, or Entropian/Ectropian surgeries he has performed on Hybrids oand then on "Purebreeds"(meaning recognized for over a century,ie, stud books closed etc..)ask the vet how many hybrids he has had to humanely euthanize due to CARDIOMYOPATHY or VWD, then ask how many PUREBREEDS,even London's Leading Pet Health Insurance Co. has come public to state THEY have found the purebreeds COST THE MOST IN HEALTH / VETERINARY /MEDICAL MAINTENANCE and how much hardier the hybrids/ even "mutts"/ crossbreeds are! ...there are many more sites to cover all of these details and I will be providing them for you in near future. You may also click on our "FAVORITE LINKS" to bring you to some of the sites we recommend...

We are now concentrating on multiple generations...but NEVER "Inbreeding"...we will always "outcross" within 2 generations on one side or another...
Here's an easy way to understand the genetics of hybridization - an F1, or a first generation, are 1/2 and 1/2, like Smoky and Ping and could take after either parent and not in a 50/50 balance necessary (Tiffany is a GOOD example), or hopefully they show the characteristics of both in a balanced cross, as did Pierre. F2's are the result of two F1's 1/2 and 1/2 plus 1/2 and 1/2, this can result in 1/4 of the progeny reverting to the original foundation stock, however - this means that all of the characteristics of the original would have to evident themselves in one specimen which is statistically unlikely, meaning looks PURE "poodle" or "pure" pekingese, but really not... by F3 the the chances are down to 1/8 again having to have all the factors evident themselves in one/same specimen. By F4 the hybrid should be stabilizing itself very well, and puppies will be VERY UNIFORM (not nearly as big a gamble to produce the "Tiffany" syndrome, this is what we call BREED TYPE, consistant progeny..

Even PUREBREEDS/STRAIGHTLINE Breeds can have "throwbacks" !
Not to confuse you anymore,LOL...but even though we have "F-4 and F-5" breedings....there are still chances of a "throwback"....this is seen in all aspects of genetic makeup due to "recessive" and or "dominant" genes...mother nature does this to remind us...we might be "95-99%"...but she is still the remaining 1-5%,LOL!!
