Pekapoo Breed Standard
Ideal Breed Type...An overview of the Standard.... Over all balance is of the utmost importance...A small sturdy active toy dog with a friendly outward appearance. Pekapoos should be a small compact very sturdy built dog. Not exceeding 10" tall at maturity. The smaller dog preferred. Ideally they are slightly longer than tall, apx 10 to 8 ratio...The shorter cobbier dog that is heavier boned is to be preferred over a taller leggy type with light bone and lighter weight.Ideally they are short, cobby, sturdy and have good substance.
There are 2 varieties in coats, both are equally acceptable.
(1)The "Silky or Powderpuff" also called Long-Coats can have a floor length coat at maturity, including long hair on face, skull and muzzle. Silky/ Powderpuff variety should be very soft to touch and the longer the better, it is common to have wavy or curly texture. Top knot is to be pulled back in single bow or tie fashion
(2)The Plush or "Teddy" variety is to be a shorter thick coat of medium length and texture, length of coat not to be over abundant and should be smooth and short on face, skull and muzzle. Coat should be moderately straight, a slight wave is acceptable, however excessive curling or harsh texture is a fault in Teddy variety.
Colors:
All colors are acceptable, with white markings highly desirable. A parti color is a white dog with colored markings over body, ideally they are to have a white splash between eyes on forehead.
Temperament:
General attitude is quiet, happy go lucky, somewhat reserved with strangers. Good alert watchdogs, but an aggressive or shy nature is to be faulted.
Head:
The head is their trademark! Head should be round and dome type, not flat or squared off, muzzle to be as square and blunt as possible, with good amount of "cushion" to lips. They are NOT to be flat faced,ie pug or bulldog! No deep wrinkling on face, a small amount is acceptable but not desirable.
Muzzle:
should not exceed head length by 50%, but ideal is one third length. Ideal head to muzzle proportion is 3 to 1. A long or snipey,or narrow muzzle is a major fault. An underbite is ideal but teeth or tongue should NOT show when mouth is closed! A level or even bite is acceptable. A scissors or overbite bite is a major fault!
Ears:
Ears should be small and hang in a drop fashion, a flying or prick ear is a fault, a rose ear is acceptable but not desirable.
Eyes:
Almond to round, but not bulging or pop eyes, and should be as dark as possible. A blue eye is undesirable accept in a white or parti.
Back:
Topline should be straight and tail set on even with back or slightly higher. hang or drop when relaxed.
Tailset:
Tail should curl up over back, but may be cropped to first or second joint.
Legs:
Legs should be slightly bowed in front, with strong pasterns and tight feet.Splayed feet are a major fault. Rear hindquarters should be strong and full through lower thigh, and hocks short and strong.
Gait:
Should be light and "jaunty" should gait with a slight jaunt or roll, known as the "Marilyn Monroe" wiggle.
Faults: Excesive wrinkles on face, bulging eyes, severly overshot or undershot mouths, flying ears, upright ears, monorchid, cryptorchid, overly shy or aggressive nature.
